Savvy developers looking for the next big thing in mobile business apps may actually have two big things to set their sights on: web-based cloud computing and related appliance-like devices. That's the collective opinion of analysts from ABI Research and the Enderle Group.

The dominant force in mobile apps is likely to be cloud computing, according to ABI Research in its recent study "Mobile Cloud Computing." ABI Research forecasts that the number of mobile cloud computing subscribers worldwide will rise from 42.8 million in 2008, (approximately 1.1 percent of all mobile subscribers) to more than 998 million in 2014 (nearly 19 percent).

Mobile cloud applications move the computing power and data storage away from mobile phones and into the cloud, bringing apps and mobile computing not just to smartphone users but a wide spectrum of mobile subscribers.

Some innovative applications are already commercially available. Lock manufacturer Schlage, for example, has launched LiNK - a keyless lock system for the home that enables subscribers to remotely control not only the door lock, but heating/cooling, security cameras and light monitors, all via PC or mobile device.

Details of T-Mobile's third Android OS-based smartphone with a sliding keyboard and HVGA Touchscreen have been slipping out for some time now, but this model -- which may be called the my Touch Slide -- reportedly won't be introduced for several more months.
Despite the leaks, not all the details on this model are available yet, but its release has been fairly well established for the middle of May, in time for the rush of smartphone sales that generally come during school graduations and Father's Day.
A Preliminary Overview of the T-Mobile my Touch SlideThe original T-Mobile myTouch 3G debuted last year, and has a tablet shape with an HVGA touchscreen. The second model in the series will supposedly go a somewhat different route.
It will reportedly offer the same HVGA (320 by 480 pixel) touchscreen, but add a 4-row QWERTY keyboard that can be hidden behind its display. Next to the screen will be a trackpad.
Both were apparently designed by HTC, despite their different designs.
The next-generation myTouch model will run Google's Android OS. This means it will have strong ties to this company's online services for email, calendar, navigation, and more.
In top of this its expected to use HTC Sense, this company's alternate user interface that expands on Google's standard one.
