Mobile 30: the importance of being mobile

As smartphones become smarter, they’re rapidly becoming like a mobile virtual office. Michela Ledwidge comes to grips with 18 productivity-boosting mobile apps for business.
In a short space of time, the market for mobile applications has exploded to the point where it is nearly impossible to keep track. With so much choice, which apps will actually be useful for your business? Here are some tips for the major mobile operating systems – iPhone, BlackBerry, Symbian, and Windows Mobile, as well as for other devices supporting Java.
Email
For the immediate future, email remains the most likely business tool for your mobile device. For BlackBerry and iPhone users, the pre-installed email applications provide more than adequate features. If you’re running a Microsoft Exchange server, you can synchronise your Nokia phone using the free Mail for Exchange app. For older devices, free web services like mail2web can be worth bookmarking in your browser.
Voice calls
Skype offers a range of free apps (iPhone, Windows Mobile) to connect to its voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and text chat service. However, Skype only allows you to make voice calls while on a Wi-Fi wireless network such as at your home or office. This is because mobile operators want you to pay their long-distance call rates, which are usually more expensive than the cost of data in a VoIP call. Skype can pay off with international conference calls, especially when combined with the SkypeIn service, allowing you to purchase local numbers in other countries.

Choosing a Mobile Phone Plan

There are many factors to take into consideration when choosing a mobile phone plan as there are many costs associated with choosing a mobile phone plan. First, assess your needs for a mobile phone. Mobile phone plans can often be difficult to decipher and sometimes hard to understand so knowing exactly what you need can be key to choosing the proper plan that fits your needs. Properly assessing the situation that you are in can save you a lot of money when it comes to choosing a mobile phone plan. Will your mobile phone be used only in case of emergencies or for minimal calling? If so, then you can choose a mobile phone plan that is economical but will allow you to make phones calls on an as needed basis. If you intend to use the phone a lot or if this phone will replace a home phone, then it is wise to choose a mobile phone plan that will more than cover your needs. Will you use your mobile phone a lot for business? If so, you may need an extended plan that allows you the most minutes possible. The same is true for data if you intend to have a mobile phone that can access the internet. A mobile phone package that contains data usage is much better than paying as you go as data usage prices can become astronomical on their own. Are you someone who texts a lot or do you anticipate that you will be texting a lot? If so, your plan should contain enough text messages to suit your needs. Will you be sharing your phone with anyone else or adding another phone to your plan? Family plans can save households a lot of money because everything is combined. However, this also means that everyone in the family draws from the same pool of minutes, data and text messages. It is recommended that families continually check to see what has been used and what is still available with regards to your mobile phone plan. Going over in minutes, text messages or in data can be very costly. Next, decide whether you want a pre-paid plan which may save you the most money or if you want to be billed for your mobile phone usage. Once you have decided, this also may be a deciding factor on which mobile phone you will get to go with your plan. Some carriers only offer certain phones to pre-paid customers. Then, check to see the coverage area of the mobile phone carrier before choosing your plan. If you travel a lot, you must make certain that when traveling, you will still be in the coverage area of the carrier. Finally, decide where you will call. Many carriers now divide their mobile phone plans into local and regional with different costs for each type of call. With most mobile phone plans, the larger the coverage area desired, the more money you can expect to spend on the plan. As an occasional mobile phone user, if you do not travel outside of your local area, you can save money by choosing a local coverage plan. In many cases, it pays to do some research. You may be required to sign a contract with some carriers when choosing a mobile phone plan. If at all possible, try to limit the length of the contract or go on a month-to-month basis only. Ask around and see what kinds of plans your family, friends and colleagues have with their mobile phone. When choosing a plan, make certain that rather than focusing solely on price, you take the quality of service into consideration as well.

Most Popular Mobile Phone Brands

The most popular mobile phone brands are recognizable names in this very competitive market. Mobile phones continue to become more sophisticated, easier to use and have come down considerably in price. There was a time when a camera on your mobile phone was a feature that the majority of phones did not have. However as technology has increased, the camera now seems to be a standard feature on most mobile phones. The same can be said of MP3 players and video capabilities. Mobile phone features have increased tenfold in the past five years alone and continue to evolve every day. The cameras are better, there are more music features even on the basic phones and the keyboards have only gotten better as well. The illusive Apple iPhone, more than one year after its release still continues to dominate the mobile phone market across the world. Although Apple is the newest company in the market, people were enamored before the release of the iPhone and still continue to be enamored today with the capabilities of this wunderkind of the Apple family. The sleek design combined with the larger screen make this much sought after mobile phone worth the wait and worth the waiting in line to get it. Samsung closely followed on the heels of Apple introducing a very capable competitor yet the Samsung version had the QWERTY keyboard that many iPhone users thought their phones were lacking. Combine this with the beloved touch screen and Samsung became one of the top competitors in the mobile phone market. Samsung's followers are those who love innovation as this brand really caters to music lovers and those who text a lot. Nokia has long dominated the market with low- to mid-priced mobile phones. While these phones may not always have the latest features right away, Nokia does tend to catch up quickly. Nokia was one of the early pioneers of the flip phone and has recently introduced an iPhone competitor named the WiMax Edition which is soon to be released worldwide. Nokia still continues to offer the flip phone and a one piece phone as well. SonyEricsson mobile phones have competed steadily for many years. Sony Ericsson offers a competitive range of both high end and less expensive phones with every budget in mind. SonyEriccson has always been known for producing quality mobile phones and has continuously ranked high with its Cyber-shot model. LG is another fairly new company in the mobile phone marketplace. LG meaning Life is Good offers sleek phones with a variety of features designed with all ages in mind. These mobile phones tend to range in prices and with this, in capabilities as well. LG offers something for every budget and offers features for everyone. LG is definitely now considered a leader in the mobile phone market. So how do you choose the best mobile phone or decide who makes the best mobile phones? It truly depends on the person and what you are looking for as a user. Quality and durability are two of the major factors to take into consideration when purchasing any mobile phone. Beyond that, you must decide what other purposes your mobile phone can or will serve. How will you use your phone? This is an important question to ask yourself as the answer should solely determine what type of mobile phone you should purchase. The mobile phone that you purchase will also depend on the carrier that you choose and the plans that this carrier offers. Not every carrier will offer every brand of mobile phone so it pays to do some research if you are looking for a particular brand of phone.

Characteristics of the Best Mobile Phone Plans

The mobile phone is the one device today that keeps us connected to each other more than anything else. Choosing a mobile phone plan that completely suits your needs as a consumer is the key to keeping costs low while allowing you to truly have the "best" mobile phone plan available. There are several characteristics that define or encompass the best mobile phone plans. First, a top characteristic of the best mobile phone plan should be customer service. What kind of support will the carrier that you choose for your mobile phone plane provide for you? Will there always be someone available to answer your questions? If you have a problem, can the customer service associate help you to resolve the situation? If they cannot solve the problem, can they direct you to the proper person who can? An additional feature of excellent customer service is that when you contact your carrier, are they doing what they can to save you money and make certain that you are on the proper plan for your needs. With all of the competition amongst carriers, the carrier you choose should always be looking out for your best interests and this means doing whatever they can to save you money. Check out your carrier first before committing to anything. Look at their website and call customer service to see how quickly they respond. Also check around to see what others have said about the customer service of the carrier. As long as the majority of the comments are good, then you can be assured that this carrier provides the customer service that you need. Second, the best mobile phone plans take your preferences into account. If you are not someone who likes to be tied to a contract, then your mobile phone plan should be the type to pay as you go, pre-paid or a no contract type of account. If your mobile phone will only be used for emergencies, then also consider these types of plans. These plans can keep your costs to a minimum but they also provide very little usage of the phone without any additional charges. The best mobile phone plan will suit your needs and that of your family. If you are someone who has a larger family or more than one person on your plan, then you should sign up for a family plan which allows a certain amount of minutes for everyone on your account. Another characteristic of the best mobile phone plans is that you are rewarded for your usage. Being the customer of your carrier for a certain period of time should have rewards. Some carriers allow you a credit to choose a new phone and other carriers allow you to upgrade your handset every couple of years for no charge at all. The best mobile phone plans also provide coverage wherever you need to be. If you travel the country or stick close to home, your mobile phone should be usable in any situation. You can check coverage areas with any potential carrier.

Mobile App Developers on Cloud 9

Savvy developers looking for the next big thing in mobile business apps may actually have two big things to set their sights on: web-based cloud computing and related appliance-like devices. That's the collective opinion of analysts from ABI Research and the Enderle Group.
The dominant force in mobile apps is likely to be cloud computing, according to ABI Research in its recent study "Mobile Cloud Computing." ABI Research forecasts that the number of mobile cloud computing subscribers worldwide will rise from 42.8 million in 2008, (approximately 1.1 percent of all mobile subscribers) to more than 998 million in 2014 (nearly 19 percent).
Mobile cloud applications move the computing power and data storage away from mobile phones and into the cloud, bringing apps and mobile computing not just to smartphone users but a wide spectrum of mobile subscribers.
Some innovative applications are already commercially available. Lock manufacturer Schlage, for example, has launched LiNK - a keyless lock system for the home that enables subscribers to remotely control not only the door lock, but heating/cooling, security cameras and light monitors, all via PC or mobile device.
"By 2014, mobile cloud computing will become the leading mobile application development and deployment strategy, displacing today's native and downloadable mobile applications," says Mark Beccue, a senior analyst at ABI Research.
Rob Enderle, lead analyst with the Enderle Group, believes the next decade will be defined by appliance-like devices and the cloud services that support them.
Seeding the Cloud"PCs are off the bubble -- while smart phones, slates, smartbooks, and eBooks are climbing up to take their place," says Enderle, noting the cloud will become a central repository for data and applications.
The main appeal of web-based applications is they will increase the amount and variety of mobile applications. Beccue says the web gives developers an OS-agnostic platform that enables them to write an app once and have it work across multiple mobile platforms.
Web-based apps, with evolved mobile browsers, will democratize the market for mobile apps, bringing apps to both users of common-feature phones and smartphones, as well as other mobile devices. He says users won't have to worry about having a device with limited processing power and data storage capacity as the powerful remote servers will handle processing and storage. Beccue predicts that business productivity applications will soon dominate the mix of mobile cloud applications, particularly collaborative document sharing, scheduling, and sales force management apps.
Companies driving this brave new world are Amazon, Google, and SalesForce.com, all of which have offerings in the platform as a service (PaaS) space.
The major appeal of these platforms for developers is they are built around one development language or methodology. The platforms offer highly efficient coding, enabling developers to automate tasks such as setting up a new app as a web service. Most of these platforms also provide a cloud infrastructure service that allows developers to launch an app in an environment that can grow with demand for it.
Finally, PaaS give developers a common set of standards and technologies to create, test, debug and run an application - thereby eliminating lots of wasted time involved in creating an app in one environment and migrating to another. Beccue adds that the growth of the mobile cloud market over the next year or so will be driven by location-enabled services such as navigation and map applications.

Mastering Internet Programming on Mobile Devices: First Steps

So, you need to develop an application that will be able to send and receive some data over the Internet or an intranet from/to remote Web servers. This article set will help you figure out how to do it using WinInet for many common cases. This article will review the initial steps. Let's say a couple of words regarding which language to use or mainly which environment to use: CF.NET or native C/C++ code. With all the enhancements that CF.NET SP2 has, it still experiences particular troubles with communications; for example, communications through proxy servers requiring NTLM authentication. Native code provides many more opportunities on this topic. Thus, when making your final decision, keep all this in mind. In this article, we will use both C++ and C# for code snippets.
Managing URLs
Prior to establishing any connection, your application should have a valid URL to connect to. WinInet provides a wide set of functions to deal with. First, there are a couple of calls to verify whether there is an opportunity to start communications:DWORD InternetAttemptConnect(DWORD dwReserved);
BOOL InternetCheckConnection(LPCSTR lpszUrl,DWORD dwFlags,
DWORD dwReserved);
You can use them to be sure the device is connected to the network and the request may be executed.

Other useful API calls are:
InternetGetConnectedState—retrieves the connected state of the local system
InternetGetConnectedStateEx—retrieves the connected state of the specified Internet connection
They show the existing capabilities on a particular system. Via these functions, you may deetct whether the system uses a proxy server to establish connection.
The next group of functions helps you deal with URLs. They are listed below:
InternetCrackUrl
InternetCreateUrl
InternetCombineUrl
InternetCanonicalizeUrl

Using Location-Enabled MIDlets for Mobile Navigation

Location information has become fairly easy to access nowadays, even on mobile devices. The widespread availability of GPS chipsets such as the SiRF chipsets, which are accurate to within a few meters, as well as the significantly lower costs of these products, have contributed to the accessibility. The Location API for J2ME (JSR 179) even makes it very easy for developers to integrate location information into mobile applications.
This article illustrates how to combine JSR 179 and Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) to provide navigation for a GPS-enabled mobile device. The application will employ the Scalable 2D Vector Graphics API for J2ME (JSR 226) and a MIDlet. As an example, the article provides and refers to a sample NetBeans project for a college "campus navigation" application.

Determining the Device LocationYou can determine the location of a mobile device in several ways. Mobile-location methods can be based either on a network or a mobile device. In the network-based location method, you have the following options:

The Cell-ID method. This method identifies the location of the handset from the Base Transceiver Station (BTS) that the handset is communicating with and the location of that BTS. Its precision is determined by the size of the cell, and it can be quite inaccurate.
Enhanced-Observed Time Difference (E-OTD)/Uplink Time Difference of Arrival (U-TDOA)/Observed Time Difference of Arrival (OTDOA) methods. These methods use monitored time differences to locate the mobile device. Their precision depends on the precision of the mobile network's system time.
In mobile-based location methods, you have GPS (Global Positioning System). GPS is potentially the most accurate method, but it has a couple of drawbacks. First, it consumes a lot of battery power while in use. Second, its performance suffers in canyon environments such as cities, where satellite visibility is intermittent, tall buildings block the GPS signals, and satellite signals are too limited to estimate the position of the user.
The following are the two types of mobile-based location methods for GPS:
Assisted Global Positioning Systems (A-GPS). For a mobile device equipped with an A-GPS receiver, the network uses the cell that the mobile device communicates with to locate the GPS satellite. It then sends this location information to the mobile device, which uses it to narrow the satellite searching scope and shorten the searching time.
Autonomous GPS. For a mobile device with a full-function GPS receiver, the mobile device obtains the location information itself. It may, however, take some time to get an initial fix on thevisible satellites.

CELL PHONES WHILE DRIVING

Studies indicate that a lot of car accidents have happened, while the driver was on the phone. This is because while driving, one obviously needs to concentrate, and talking on a phone doesn't help. Some countries like Portugal have banned the use of cell phones, which may not be very practical, as their main use is to be reachable while you are on the move. Thus, it is important to take certain precautions while driving:
Position your phone within easy reach so that you don't have to take your eyes off the road.
Get to know the features of your cell phone - speed dial, redial, voice mail, they can be your lifesaver. But don't dial and drive at the same time. Use a hands free kit.
Avoid using a phone when road conditions are hazardous or traffic is heavy. You can let your voice mail take messages and then call back later.
Don't engage in stressful conversations that may distract your attention from the road.
Don't take notes or look up phone numbers whilst driving, wait till you can pull over.
User abbreviated speed dialing. In fact, voice activated dialing is even better. It leaves both hands free. Frequently called numbers can be programmed.
Have an answering machine installed that could take messages until you can return the calls. Let your co-passenger handle the calls if you are not travelling alone.

CELL PHONES AND HEALTH

Though there is no evidence of cell phones causing cancer or any such illness, but the suspicion, or fear of the same is not baseless either. The electromagnetic radiation from cell phones does have a potential link to cancer. The fact that this radiation is invisible, intangible, and enters and leaves our bodies without our knowledge makes it even more intimidating. Possible hazards:
Two minutes of exposure to emissions from mobile phones can disable a safety barrier in blood causing proteins and toxins to leak into the brain, could increase chances of developing Alzheimer's multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's. (Scientists at Sweden's Lund University)
Scientists say exposure to the phones' low-level radiation causes red blood cells to leak hemoglobin and can lead to heart disease and kidney stones.
Recent studies suggesting a link between cell-phone use and brain tumors, and the possibility that the microwaves could ignite petroleum fumes at gas stations.
A cell phone unit, or communications tower, has so many of thee radiation emanating gadgets. This can be a problem for its immediate environment.

How to free More RAM on your mobile phone

Method 1: Flight mode:Put your phone in "Flight mode" with Psiloc System Tools. Install System Tools, open it and select "Flight mode". This way you can restart the phone without your SIM card so there will be no running phone tasks in the background. Now you can have up to 3,5 MB of free RAM!Note: ironically enough, Flight mode doesn't work when Smart Launcher is installed, at least in my case. But i've also heard several reports of people who have both apps running without any problems.
Method 2: Smart Launcher trick:Install Smart Launcher and open it. Go to Options, Settings and put Launcher ON.Now plug in your charger and switch off your phone. Wait until the battery meter appears and short press the Menu button (don't hold). The menu should appear and now you can have 3,5 to 4,5 MB free RAM! (Hold Menu button to check RAM).The trick is that with the charger plugged in, the phone must get a minimum software support for charging, even when the phone is switched off. And somehow Smart Launcher has still got it's shortcut running and that's the Menu button. So when you press the Menu button, you go directly to the Menu without any other phone tasks running in the background so you trick the phone and you have more free RAM! Note: when you unplug the charger, the phone will switch off.Method 3: Menu :This method I found it by myself, it frees a little about 100~200 KB but I guess it's useful sometimeClose your menu not by selecting the right selection key "exit", or pressing the menu key another time, they only hide the menu app but do not close it, to close it select the left selection key "option" and scroll down and select "exit"So when you open an app needs more ram reopen menu and close it, it's useful when play low bit rate video in real player paradise.

Opening Channels That Other Mobile Ad Platforms Can't Reach

The Sigma Mobile Advertising Platform integrates with traditional mobile network services to open up new ad delivery channels and turn mobile operators into publishers. Conventional ad platform avoid operator integration; we embrace it.
The Sigma Platform lets advertisers create cross-channel mobile campaigns using SMS, MMS, WAP, USSD, voice, video, and virtually any other ad delivery channel. We deliver ads on any service that uses these channels; for example, missed-call notifications, bill payment alerts, and other operator-generated text messages.
The platform then manages the responses to these ads, sending follow-up messages on the same channel or on different channels. An advertiser or marketer is free to link messages according to the media that makes the most sense: an initial text ad can link to a mobile web site or an IVR; an IVR key press can trigger an MMS push or another IVR messages; and so on. No need to jump between different campaign management platforms or cobble together data to create unified reports.
The Sigma Platform includes a campaign creation and management system, a high performance ad selection engine, and a feature-rich analysis and reporting system. The API is flexible enough to adapt to nearly any kind of messaging or content delivery channel.

Mobile phone for marketing

Using a mobile phone is becoming an increasingly common undertaking. Making telephone calls, texting, listening to music and even utilising a camera to take pictures are just a few of the applications which can be used on the more modern mobile phones. However, there have been even greater advances recently in the quest to make even greater use of the mobile phone. Many businesses are now utilising mobile marketing techniques to promote their product or service.Initiatives such as video streaming and SMS marketing can now be accessed via the mobile phone which allows customers or potential clients to access business information at all times in the quickest and most convenient of methods. This methodology can be implemented in order to target only a certain client group or social faction by a registration process or by installing specific signal technology in very targeted venues. Night clubs, bars, museums and such are just some of the places where these signals can be placed. This method of personalised targeting ultimately can save a business a great deal of money by preventing advertising budgets being spent on initiatives which may inadvertently be accessed by non-interested parties. Recently, the Mobile Marketing Association has issued a set of guidelines which will prevent companies from abusing this method of advertising and this brings greater protection not only to the potential customer or recipient but also to the mobile marketing industry as a whole. These guidelines can help this relatively new format become a more established, respected and regulated process making it an increasingly safe method of advertising. At MPP Global we can help administer and manage the mobile marketing process making life easier for the company utilising this technology. We can ensure that business customers receive the correct and relevant information in the best format for the recipient.

My new battery isn't charging .in your mobile Is it defective

One needs to discharge and recharge a new battery at least 2-4 times for it to reach it's maximum rated capacity, as most of these new batteries, are not charged. An overnight charge or 12 hours, is a good enough time for your battery. An indication could be the battery getting warm to the touch. When charging the battery for the first time, the device may indicate that charging is complete after just 10 or 15 minutes. This is normal with

rechargeable batteries. New batteries are hard for the device to charge; they have never been fully charged and not "broken in." Sometimes the device's charger will stop charging a new battery before it is fully charged. If this happens, remove the battery from the device and then reinsert it. The charge cycle should begin again

GET THE MOST FROM YOUR CELL PHONE BATTERY

Prevent the Memory Effect - Keep the battery healthy by fully charging and then fully discharging it at least once every two to three weeks. Exceptions to the rule are Li-Ion batteries, which do not suffer from the memory effect. Do not leave the battery dormant for long periods of time.Always use a battery charger, which is by the same manufacturer as your phone, it gives it more life. It also helps if you overcharge your battery now and then.Keep the Batteries Clean - It's a good idea to clean dirty battery contacts with a cotton swab and alcohol. This helps maintain a good connection between the battery and the portable device. Do not leave your cell phone near any source of heat, a common place being the dashboard of your car, as extreme heat may affect the battery. The battery also operates better at room temperature, vis-à-vis extreme cold. The vibrator mode of your cell phone consumes more battery, so when not needed, use the ring-tone mode.Battery Storage - If you don't plan on using the battery for a month or more, store it in a clean, dry, cool place away from heat and metal objects. Batteries tend to de-charge when not in use, so make sure you charge them again before using. The performance of any cell phone battery, however, no matter how properly cared for, usually diminishes after about a year. It is better to get your battery replaced then.
